Family Promise of WNY (formerly: Interfaith Hospitality Network) is a cost-efficient, effective, and replicable community response to homelessness. We bring together existing community resources, especially faith congregations, to assist with our mission. When a family loses its home, they are in crisis, and FPWNY responds with our small staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. We do this through core services: our host and support congregations provide lodging, meals and hospitality for our families in need. Each day begins with breakfast at a host congregation, provided by volunteers. At the end of the day the guests return to the host site where volunteers provide dinner and support. The evening hours are relaxation times, as they would be for any family. The day ends with the family safe and together under one roof. Host site shelters up to 3 families in its building for one week at a time, 4 times a year.
Our parish serves as a support congregation meaning we do not house the families on site but rather help provide support staff for one day of the week. We will be partnering with Infant of Prague Parish in Cheektowaga. In order to make a commitment as a parish to the work of Family Promise, we need a parish coordinator and a pool of volunteers from St. Joseph University Parish to make a one year commitment (4 times through the year) to this service of outreach. We already have a couple who volunteered to host the overnight shift and 1 additional volunteer to help with another shift. If you are interested in volunteering or want more info, contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com. You can also go to: www.IHNGB.org. Hospitality is not a special skill, but the joyful mandate of a just and loving people.

JUST NEWS:
Have I talked to anyone about the problem of Climate Change?
Have I helped anyone to wake up?
Catholic Social Teaching on the Environment: Our cars and power plants, more energy consumption and waste - were leaving a bigger carbon footprint. Here and around the world, it is the poor who will be hit the hardest. As faithful Catholics, we have a moral obligation to care for both Creation and the poor. Before it is too late, it is necessary to make courageous decisions to curb climate change. Pope Benedict XVI
Action: Consider having an energy audit performed on your home and insulating and making the necessary changes to make your home energy efficient. There are local companies that can do this and you will receive a tax credit at the same time. You will not only be helping the planet; you will be saving money on your heating bills.
Get a Charge out of Recycling your old batteries! Bring your old batteries to the Community Room for recycling during September!
