DID YOU KNOW…A SERIES OF CHURCH FACTS
Why do Catholics make the Sign of the Cross? The sign of the Cross came into use as a religious gesture of blessing during the Middle Ages. In the 2nd century a little cross made on the forehead using only one finger was a popular practice. This popular gesture was introduced into the liturgy during the 4th century with the tracing of the cross on the forehead of candidates for baptism. It was also used from early centuries as a gesture of blessing over the bread and wine of Eucharist and other objects to be dedicated to God. In this way people, too, were blessed.

Considering Becoming Catholic? …Or Know Someone To Invite Who Is Thinking About Becoming Catholic? This may be what you have been waiting for! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for those who have been previously baptized but never catechized or formally welcomed to the sacrament of initiation. It is also a process for those who want to explore the possibility of becoming Catholic or are ready to enter the Catholic Church. The RCIA is a time to examine more closely the truths of the Catholic faith and discern their meaning for your life. Sessions meet on Thursday evenings from 7-9 pm beginning in September. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext. 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com for an appointment.

Adult Confirmation: Have You Been Confirmed? Why do Catholics need the Sacrament of Confirmation? Confirmation confers upon us special graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit. It can change our lives by increasing and deepening all of the graces we received at baptism. Adults who have been Catholic all of their lives but who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation are invited to join other adults in this part of their faith journey as they prepare to be confirmed. For more info, contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com.

Golden and Diamond Anniversaries of Marriage Bishop Kmiec and the Diocese of Buffalo wish to honor couples who will observe their 50th, 60th, and 70th wedding anniversaries during 2010. A reception will follow at the Buffalo Convention Center. Couples who wish to participate in this celebration are asked to contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com.

FAST FACTS ABOUT POVERTY IN BUFFALO:

~In 1950, Buffalo was the 15th largest city in the country. It had the nation's largest inland port, was the 2nd biggest rail center, the 6th largest steel producer and the 8th largest manufacturer.
~In 1957, the St. Lawrence Seaway was opened up and the Great Lakes shipping was redirected. With continued industrialization in the 1970's and 80's, we lost 1/3 of our population in a 5 year period.
~The City of Buffalo is now ranked the 3rd poorest large city in the country with a poverty rate of nearly 30%.
